Happy Birthday Dave and Roma McCoy

Aug 24, 2015

The entire Mammoth Mountain Ski Area team would like to wish our founder, Dave McCoy a happy 100th birthday (August 24) ; and his wife Roma McCoy (August 12) a happy 95th birthday! We’ll be celebrating all month.
Dave McCoy is nothing short of a legend, channeling his love for skiing and for the Eastern Sierra to create the mountain we all are lucky enough to enjoy year-in and year-out since 1953. Prior to his time in the ski industry, Dave worked for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, sparking his passion for the mountains.
After 18 years at LADWP, Dave left his post and began a life of sharing skiing with the recreation world. He installed portable rope tows on skiable terrain starting in Independence, and worked his way north to McGee Mountain and eventually to Mammoth Mountain. The terrain and weather in Mammoth won his heart, so that’s where he settled to begin an era of resort building in what he called his “great big sandbox with the best toys I could get my hands on.”
More than 50 years later, after building 38 chairlifts and more than 4,000 acres of skiable terrain between Mammoth and June, Dave decided it was time to pass the reigns of Mammoth Mountain on to the next generation. It was someone else’s turn to play.

During his tenure at the resort, Dave used a Leica camera to document Mammoth’s evolution. He captured it all with that camera: ski racing, lift building, Eastern Sierra landscape photography and family snapshots.

It made sense that, upon his departure from the ski resort, his longtime friends gave him a gift that would define many of his post-ski resort management years and give his passion for life a different path on which to travel.

Thank you, Dave, for a century of memories and achievements – to stay updated with what the McCoys are doing today, follow them on Facebook or Instagram @DaveMcCoyPhoto

See you on the hill.
